四年前(2002 February)我也試過突發腰痛, excerpt from my old email:

I had sudden onset of low back pain last Monday night. The pain got worse during the night and I fainted around 6:00 am. My husband called the ambulance and I was then sent to A&E at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. Later that day I was admitted to the orthopaedic ward.
They took x-ray for me, did 2 blood tests and 1 ECG. Their diagnosis was as follows:
1. loss of consciousness: could not identify why, may be due to the pain
2. low back pain: incorrect posture causing some soft tissues pressing on nerve ends

I spent most of the past week lying in bed. The pain subsided by itself. The physiotherapist only spent 10 min with me on his first visit and 3 min on the second visit. He taught me some simple exercises to do and gave me a booklet on "how to look after your spine". I thought of my dad very often as he was suffering from severe back pain in his later days, I now understand a bit how he felt!
My back still feels a bit sore and I guess it will take some time to recover fully. And I have to pay attention to how I sit and stand and remind myself to maintain a correct posture always.

My hospital bill came up to 6 thousand something, but the government subsidized most of it and I only had to pay $136. I just paid the first installment of my income tax and I felt it's really value for my money!! They have already booked 3 follow-ups for me for internal medicine & orthopaedic.
